Paris Stock Exchange

The Paris Stock Exchange is a circular plan building surmounted by a dome located rue de Viarmes , in the Halles district  of the 1st arrondissement of Paris . It is also an institution which was housed until 1885 in the Palais Brongniart . This building is built on the site of the former Hôtel de Soissons .

Ruined by the bankruptcy of Law , Victor-Amédée I of Savoie -Carignan saw himself obliged in 1740 to sell the Hôtel de Soissons , the former palace of Catherine de Médicis . The provostship of Paris bought the land and destroyed the buildings in 1748 .

Construction of the hall

Philippe Auguste had established the Halles de Paris at Champeaux: wheat from the plain of Luzarches arrived there by road, and that from Brie in boats which landed at the Port au Blé, at the foot of the town hall . But the district was the object of a permanent crush which complicated the routing of the grains. In the 18th  century, the wheat market was located between rue de la Tonnellerie and rue de la Fromagerie (at the level of the current Forum des Halles ).

To ensure greater efficiency in the wheat trade – which formed, in the 18th century  , the main object of study of economists – it was planned to build a new corn hall. For a long time, the grounds of the former Hôtel de Soissons , which the creditors of Victor-Amédée de Savoie, Prince of Carignan were watching, had been identified as particularly suitable for this use because of their proximity to the Seine, through which the grain-laden boats. The prince died in 1741 and the hotel was seized by his creditors who obtained authorization to demolish it in order to sell the materials. The hotel was destroyed in 1748-1749. In 1755, the property was acquired by the city under letters patentof 1755 1 .

letters patent ofNovember 25, 1762, registered in parliament on the following 22 December, authorized the subdivision of the old Hôtel de Soissons and the construction of a new wheat exchange 2 .
